Works of Art Auction Results in $3 Million Dollar Sale
Webb’s is delighted to report that the August 2024 Works of Art auction was one of our most successful in recent memory, with the sale total coming in at $3 million dollars.
The highlight of the night was the beautiful Malay Dove, Wooden Mansions by Don Binney, which sold for a strong price of $575,398. Bold abstract paintings by Ralph Hotere and Colin McCahon saw fantastic results, with Hotere's Black Window Towards Aramoana selling for $232,608, and McCahon's The First Bellini Madonna closing in at $318,305.
Competitive bidding saw Bill Sutton’s Te Tihi O Kahukura and Sky (The Citadel of the Rainbow God) selling for a total of $100,389, well over the top estimate of $90,000. New artist records for the highest prices ever paid at auction in New Zealand were set for Doris Lusk with Summer Landscape, Canterbury realising $58,152 and Andy Warhol with the print Mick Jagger FS IIB.147 achieving a total of $173,621.
Other excellent prices were also achieved for works by Bill Hammond, Pauline Yearbury, Paul Dibble, and Tony Fomison.
These results depict an art market that is still very buoyant, particularly at the premier, museum-quality level of work. Our next Works of Art auction takes place in November and we welcome early consignments of culturally significant works by important local and international artists. Should you have any works or collections you would like to bring to market, please reach out to our specialist team for a complimentary appraisal.
